The canonical disaster happened at a roulette table in the Casino de Monte-Carlo. Black hit. Then again. By the tenth black, word spread through the room; by the fifteenth, players were shoveling money onto red, reasoning that the universe owed them a correction. Black came up 26 times in a row. The house made a fortune — not by cheating, but by letting arithmetic collide with intuition.
The odds of that particular run were about one in 67 million. But here is the detail the ruined players missed: at spin 26, given the 25 blacks already on the board, the chance of another black was the same as always. The wheel does not know what it did. Nothing in physics connects one spin to the next — the streak existed only in the players’ records, not in the mechanism.
Why brains produce the fallacy
Psychologists Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman gave the mechanism a name: the representativeness heuristic. We expect small samples to look like the long-run average — a “fair” sequence of ten coin flips, to intuition, should be a tidy mix, so a run of six heads feels broken and due for tails. But randomness is lumpier than intuition allows; streaks are not deviations from randomness, they are what randomness looks like.
The same machinery runs in reverse as the hot-hand belief: after wins, the feeling that you are “on a roll” and should press. Both are the same error with opposite signs — reading pattern into independence. Casinos have never needed to encourage either; brains ship with them pre-installed.
Why no betting system works
Every “system” for beating independent rounds is a rearrangement of the same expected value. The famous one, the martingale — double after every loss so the first win recovers everything plus one unit — fails against arithmetic itself:

Losing streaks long enough to break any finite bankroll arrive with mathematical certainty, and betting limits exist precisely where the doubling would need to continue. The system converts many small wins plus a rare catastrophic loss into the same negative expectation the flat bettor had — with worse variance and better stories.
Independence you can audit
In a provably-fair game, independence is not a promise — it is an inspectable property. Each of our rounds is computed as HMAC-SHA256(server seed, client seed : nonce), where the nonce simply counts up. Round 41 and round 42 differ by one counter tick through a cryptographic hash; nothing about the output of one constrains the other, and after a seed rotation you can recompute both and see it.
