Jontay Porter: the under only the player can guarantee, and the bets the NBA just removed

Illustration for “Jontay Porter: the under only the player can guarantee, and the bets the NBA just removed”
On 17 April 2024 the NBA banned Jontay Porter, a two-way player with the Toronto Raptors, for life. Its investigation found that before the 20 March 2024 game he told a known bettor about his health, then played three minutes and left saying he felt ill; an associate had placed an $80,000 parlay on Porter underperforming that would have paid $1.1 million, which the sportsbook froze as suspicious. Porter had also placed at least 13 NBA bets through an associate’s account between January and March 2024 — $54,094 wagered, $76,059 paid, $21,965 net — including parlays in which he bet on his own team to lose. In July 2024 he pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, saying he did it to get out from under gambling debts; four associates were charged. The arithmetic is why this bet type exists and why it is gone: a player’s own “under” is the one market where one participant can make the outcome certain, turning a parlay priced at roughly 13-to-1 into a near-sure thing. Sportsbooks dropped unders on two-way players in 2024, and in October 2026 the NBA told its betting partners to remove single-player under parlays, unders on players expected to play under 12 minutes, opening-tip winner bets and missed-shot bets entirely.

    Three minutes on 20 March

Jontay Porter was not a star. He was a two-way player — a contract split between the Raptors and their G League affiliate — whose minutes came off the bench when they came at all. That is exactly what made him valuable to the people he was texting. A sportsbook sets a line on a bench player’s points, rebounds and threes like anyone else’s, and a bench player, unlike a star, can take himself out of a game without anyone finding it strange.

The NBA’s findings, published with the ban on 17 April 2024, describe the mechanism in one paragraph. Before the Raptors’ 20 March game against Sacramento, Porter told an individual he knew to be an NBA bettor about his own health status. An associate then placed an $80,000 parlay with an online sportsbook on Porter underperforming his lines — the “unders” — which would have paid $1.1 million. Porter played three minutes, said he felt ill, and left. The sportsbook, seeing unusual money on a two-way player’s unders, froze the bet and never paid it.

Figures from the NBA’s announcement of 17 April 2024 and ESPN’s report of the 10 July 2024 plea. Porter said he acted to get out from under large gambling debts; sentencing has been postponed several times and had not been imposed at the time of writing.

Why the under is the only bet a player can guarantee

Most sports bets are priced near even money. A line on “Porter under 5.5 points” is set so that, on the sportsbook’s information, it hits about half the time; the book charges −110 on each side and keeps the vig. A parlay chains such legs: four legs at −110 multiply to about 13.3 to 1, which is why $80,000 could stand to return $1.1 million. The price is fair only on one assumption — that each leg is a coin the book and the bettor are both watching from outside.

An “over” cannot be guaranteed. A player who wants to score 20 still needs the ball, the minutes and the shots to fall. An “under” can: play three minutes and every under on the card is settled. That asymmetry is the whole scandal. The bettor who knows the player will exit is not betting on a coin at all; the leg’s probability is close to 1, and a parlay of such legs is a 13-to-1 payout on a near-certainty. Expected value per dollar goes from about −0.05 (the vig) to about +12.7.

Calculation for this article: four legs at −110 each return 1.909× when they hit, and 1.909⁴ ≈ 13.3, matching the reported $80,000 → $1.1 million (13.75×). If the legs are genuine coin-flips the parlay wins about 6% of the time and returns about 85 cents on the dollar; if the player makes the unders certain, it returns about 13.75 dollars on the dollar. Nothing about the line moved — only who controlled the outcome.

This is also why the sportsbook caught it. Integrity monitoring does not read minds; it reads money. Large, correlated stakes on the unders of a player nobody normally bets on, placed shortly before tip-off, look like nothing else in the book’s data, and the $1.1 million was frozen before Porter had left the arena. The scheme failed at the payout, not at the court.

The fix was not a better line. It was no line.

A market in which one participant can decide the result cannot be priced; it can only be withdrawn. Within weeks of the ban, the major US sportsbooks stopped offering unders on players on two-way or ten-day contracts. On 16 October 2026, with the season days away and two more player cases in the federal courts, the NBA went further and told its betting partners to remove the instruments themselves: parlays built on a single player’s unders, unders on any player expected to play fewer than twelve minutes, bets on who wins the opening tip, and bets on a player missing a specific shot.

Read that list as a threat model. Every item is a bet whose outcome a single person on the floor can make certain at no visible cost: a bench player can sit, a jumper can wait a beat, a shot can rim out. The league did not try to detect these better. It removed the markets where an insider’s edge is total — the same decision a casino makes when it refuses to offer a game whose result its own staff can see, which is the lesson of the superuser scandal.

ENGINE-VERIFIEDOriginalBaseDiceService.kt: 9,999 equally likely results, multiplier = (1 − house edge) ÷ win chance floored to two decimals, so “over 50.00” wins 4,999 of 9,999 (49.995%) and pays ×1.98 — a 1.00% edge. The result is derived from the committed server seed, the client seed and the nonce; no participant, including the house, has an input after the bet is placed.

That last clause is the contrast worth drawing without overdrawing it. A provably fair original is not “fairer” than basketball; it is a different kind of object. Its result is fixed by a commitment before the bet and nobody — not the player, not the operator, not a bench player with a text message — has a lever on it afterwards. Sports can never have that property, because the game is played by people, which is why the integrity of a sports market lives in which bets are offered at all. The NBA’s October memo is the league conceding the point.

    FAQ

    What did Jontay Porter do?

Per the NBA’s April 2024 findings, he told a known bettor about his health before the 20 March 2024 game, then played three minutes and left, while an associate held an $80,000 parlay on his unders worth $1.1 million (frozen by the sportsbook). He had also placed at least 13 NBA bets through an associate’s account, $54,094 in total, including parlays on his own team to lose. He pleaded guilty in July 2024 to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Why are “under” bets the problem?

An over needs minutes, the ball and made shots; an under needs only that the player stops. A bench player can make every under on his card certain by leaving early at no visible cost, which turns a parlay priced at about 13 to 1 into a near-sure payout.

How much would the parlay have paid?

$80,000 to win $1.1 million, about 13.75 to 1, consistent with four legs at −110 (1.909⁴ ≈ 13.3). The sportsbook froze it as suspicious and it was never paid.

What did the NBA change in October 2026?

It told its sportsbook partners to stop offering parlays built on a single player’s unders, unders on players expected to play under 12 minutes, bets on the opening-tip winner and bets on a player missing a specific shot. In 2024 the major books had already dropped unders on two-way and ten-day players.

Can a casino game have the same problem?

Only when someone inside can see or steer the result, as in the 2000s online-poker superuser scandal. A provably fair original fixes the result by a commitment before the bet, so no participant has a lever afterwards; that property does not exist in a game played by people.
